Finger Tendon Glides for Hand Injury or Surgery Ask Doctor Jo

Hey everybody, it's Doctor Jo. Today I'm gonna show you some finger tendon glides. This is if you've had a surgery in your hand, or if you've had an injury that has scar tissue building up to it. So let's get started. Start by propping your elbow up on something solid, and put your hand at a little bit of an angle. Put your fingers straight out. And you're gonna start with what we call the table top. So you're gonna bend at the first joint here. So keep your fingers straight and then come all the way back up. Bend then back up. And.

This is just gliding those tendons along the hand there. The next one is the hook fist. So now you're gonna curl and the next joint like this. Again gliding those tendons, breaking up scar tissue in there. Now for the straight fist. So you're gonna bend these knuckles and these knuckles and come down like this. Now for the full fist, bending them all the way down and leaving the thumb on the outside. Make sure you're opening your hand all the way back up after each one. And then the last one is the thumb curl. So you're just bringing.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Repair Surgery PreOp Patient Education Medical HD

Your doctor has recommended that you undergo hand surgery to treat carpal tunnel syndrome. But what exactly is carpal tunnel syndrome The median nerve, which carries sensation to the thumb and first three fingers, passes through a natural passageway in the wrist. This opening called the carpal tunnel is formed by archshaped wrist bones and a connecting ligament. Various conditions, such as pregnancy, injury, arthritis and changes in the tendons caused by repetitive motion can crowd the already narrow tunnel, putting pressure on the nerve. This added pressure can cause a tingling sensation in the fingers and the thumb and may even.

Lead to numbness, pain and restricted movement. This combination of symptoms is called the carpal tunnel syndrome. Your Procedure On the day of your operation, you will be asked to put on a surgical gown. You may receive a sedative by mouth and an intravenous line may be put in. You will then be transferred to the operating table. Your doctor will scrub thoroughly and will apply an antiseptic solution to the skin around the area where the incision will be made. Next, the surgeon will numb the involved area of the hand and wrist with an anesthetic,.

Either with a local injection or by completely blocking a nerve higher up on the arm. When the operative field is completely numb the surgeon will make an incision. Skin and other tissue will be carefully drawn aside to expose the carpal ligament. Then the surgeon will cut the ligament, relieving pressure on the nerve that runs beneath it. Finally the doctor will close the incision with fine sutures. A sterile bandage will be applied and a splint will be put in place to prevent the wrist from moving while healing takes place.

Treating Neuropathy and Nerve Pain in the Feet

Let me start with I'm a diabetic. I developed neuropathy, which basically you lose all sensation in the feet, but it's over a period of time. It was very painful. I would have sensations in my feet like I was standing on fire, walking on glass. Last October it got so bad that I couldn't sleep at night. Then I met Dr. Bullard, because he's just a great physician. I wouldn't think twice, I'd recommend him to anybody. Very compassionate, very thorough, I can't say enough about Dr. Bullard. He's just a great physician and I don't know.

If there's anything he couldn't do he could probably move mountains if he wanted to! Glen, probably one of the biggest questions people are asking you is what'd we do, what's happened. Of course, you had a tremendous improvement in your pain and the tingling and the numbness. Easiest explanation is, to tell everybody, that this big nerve here, which is on the inside part of your left foot, was getting strangled. There was a noose around it. What we did is we went in and loosened the noose, and that allows that nerve to begin to function and work like it's supposed.

To. Now, the sensation is coming back, it's something that's going to take time but I can feel more. My quality of life has greatly improved since I had the procedure done by Dr. Bullard. There's no other physician that I would recommend. Glen, in the next couple weeks, what we're going to do is make sure that the swelling is improving, hopefully begin to transition you out of your compression socks, because I know it's kind of hot right now, and then look at making sure that your shoe gear and things like that are where they're supposed.

Laser Therapy for Hand Pain Arthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Cold laser is a great treatment for increasing blood flow and decreasing pain. We have multiple patients who have osteoarthritis or degeneration in their hands and fingers. Cold laser is a great treatment at increasing the blood flow, decreasing those pain sensors out of those joints in the hands and finger. And it's a very simple treatment. Cold laser is going to send energy in a signal into the muscles, fingers and cells to help trigger mechanisms to increase those blood flows. It get the little arteries to open up and dilate, rushing the blood in. It's going to get the healing mechanisms to ramp.

Up. It's also going to produce a lot more energy inside the cell. The mitochondria start producing ATP. That's your cells gasoline. So between these processes it helps decrease the pain stiffness that people feel. We've seen people with a big thick knuckles from either rheumatoid or an osteoarthritis and they responded really well to laser. We usually combine this with other treatments in the office but laser we're just going to do a quick demo up. We need glasses for that purpose because of the intensity of the class four laser.

All we really see is a little red light. That red light is shining along and marks where we're going from. Now, this laser as I can feel the warming sensation happening as I'm going across the skin, we just screen but it's dropping about 5 joules a second into each spot on my finger. The class four lasers can produce about 20 joules a second where the older class three lasers would produce about 5 joules in a minute. The difference is now the depth of penetration so we can make an impact deeper in the skin.

Nerve Pain Desensitization Techniques Ask Doctor Jo

Hey everybody, it's Doctor Jo. Today we're gonna talk about desenstizizensation. no. desensensation. no. Desensitizing something! A lot of times when people have a surgery or an injury, the nerves get all crazy and flared up. And so you have to desensitize the area and help the nerves grow back to where their supposed to. So all you need is just a bunch of different things that have different textures. And I have a towel, a cotton ball, a fork, and kind of a silk cloth. What you're gonna do is the area that feels.

Weird, lots of times it's a numbness, tingly, burning kind of feeling, just take the first object you want to do, and lightly rub it over the area. It might feel weird, it might fee really uncomfortable. It might actually hurt a little bit, even if it's just a little cotton ball. But rub it over that area for about 30 seconds to a minute and then move on to the next texture. A plastic fork works well, make sure you don't stab yourself, but just kind of rubbing it again lightly over the area to help those nerves find their way.

Back to where they're supposed to be. And then move on to the next one. Kind of a silk cloth. Just rubbing it on that area. You can kind of move the body part a little bit, too, while you're rubbing it. And maybe like a course towel that's not as soft. And just rubbing it on that area. So about, you know, 35 minutes a day, just desensitizing the area, and there you have it. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments section.
