Periripheral neuropathy burning and cramping pain no more!
Alright well we're here with one of our great patients Verne. How are you doing today Verne I'm doing fine. Verne has been with us for about six weeks now. He initially contacted us about our neuropathy treatment protocol that Dr. Busch developed. Verne had quite a bit of different symptoms going on with your neuropathy. Can you tell us a little bit about what you were feeling from a symptom standpoint before you called in I was getting pains down the back of my legs and down into my feet. I had numbness under my feet and.
Pains in my toes. And these pains were real sharp and shooting Yes. Now you also had some burning pain, is that right, when you go to sleep at night Can you describe that a little bit for me It was mostly in my feet and it was kind of a burning sensation in my feet. Now how did that affect your sleep I know we've talked a lot about how you were sleeping before you came in here, can you tell me what it was like for you to try to.
Sleep at night Well I really couldn't get much sleep, I had to get up and walk around and then I'd go back and get an hour or so of sleep and finally I would sleep in my chair, recliner. I was gonna say, do you have a recliner there Yes. That's where you did most of your sleeping is that right Yes. I know this week we've gotten to a big milestone here where you're getting to sleep in your bed now, which is fantastic. Your daughter got you a nice.
Mattress topper for your mattress, the pain is no longer keeping you awake at night, is that right That's right, yes. The burning pain is 100 gone at this point so that's fantastic, and those sharp shooting pains were going all the way down your leg from the thigh all the way to the foot, those are gone all the way now for the last week or so and the only place you're having anything now is a little bit in the toe on your foot is that right So overall, how much better are you feeling now do you think compared.
To when you first came in Oh I feel 100 better. Changes your whole life doesn't it Yes. You're able to sleep through the night now and makes your whole day better when you wake up refreshed and sleeping allows your body to heal itself naturally which is part of the whole process. So overall how much better is your quality of life at this point compared to what it was Oh it's a lot better, 100 better. Don't feel that hopeless feeling about the neuropathy and that sort of thing. I know you and I have talked a little, but.
Verne did you ever feel you would get to this level of improvement, and what do you say to me You didn't feel like you could did you, you thought it was something you'd have to live with for the rest of your life. Yea. Partly because that's what you'd been told by some other doctors. Well hopefully soon we'll have you off the gabapentin that they have you taking which is a common thing for it. Living life every day and doing the things you want to do. Well thank you for your time, we love having you here as a patient, and.
Peripehral Neuropathy Painful Legs and Feet Pain Reduced .DavisSpineInstitute
When you originally presented to the office you presented very very intense peripheral neuropathy pain over your knee, lower legs, and feet. We've been managing you here for a good six weeks on the peripheral neuropathy based program. How have you been responding to the program, and what's been your experiences today When I first started it took a while before I was able to say that and feel an improvement in my problem. Particularly on the bottom of my feet, the sensory part. I could feel the difference between tile and.
Wood floor, the coldness of each and the carpet. Before I started the program I hardly could feel the difference between those items. The discoloration of the neuropathy on my legs is a great improvement and I'm very pleased with that. It does not, particularly on my right leg, it does not weep water anymore, the skin does not break, and that is a great improvement as far as I'm concerned. On my knees there is some swelling going on on my right knee, there is improvement on the inside of my knee. The outside is still a little.

We're currently managing you for a very painful case of small fiber neuropathy in your lower feet. You came to us in quite a bit of pain and managing with cymbalta and managing with gabapentin for the pain. We began the multi dial laser protocol with you for pain management with neuropathy. How are you doing today sir Well I'm not perfect but my feet feel much better. I'm able to sleep now without putting any ointments or salves or anything on my feet. I do feel better. It lets me sleep. At first I had pains in the bottom of my feet.
Like somebody was holding a cigarette lighter to them. It felt very hot and painful. Since then it has gone down quite a bit. As I walked it felt like my feet were just stuffed into my shoes and I had to get a whole size larger to get any comfort which doesn't look goo when you're walking with big feet like that. But I'm back down to normal size and I'm really pleased with this procedure that I'm going through. I thank Dr. Davis for that. Well thank you so much for trusting us with your neuropathy management and we're very very.
Fluoroquinolones and Peripheral Neuropathy
Peripheral neuropathy, this is an often devastating condition in which people develop pain and numbness in their hands and feet. Basically they're told on the evening news that they should be taking this or that medication so that they can get through life. That's treating the smoke and ignoring the fire. Those medicines that you're seeing advertised don't treat the neuropathy, they only treat the symptoms. But what's causing peripheral neuropathy Well we know that in America, one of the biggest causes of peripheral neuropathy is being diabetic, which is clearly related to the foods that you eat by and large. Becoming.
A type 2 diabetic dramatically increases your risk for having peripheral neuropathy and in fact being devastated by it. This is a disease that effects 1 in 15 Americans. Let's take a look. So again this is 1 in 15 Americansthis is 20 million Americans afflicted by this disease, that aside from diabetes, we're told the cause is unknown. Well maybe that's not exactly true. Last month, in the journal Neurology, an incredible study was published describing a relationship between what are called fluoroquinolones, and the risk of developing a peripheral neuropathy.
You may not know what fluoroquinolones are, but chances are you may have actually been exposed to fluoroquinolone. These are antibiotics used for treating things like upper respiratory infections and even urinary tract infections. Things like Levaquin and Cipro are commonly used in walk in clinics. If you have a urinary tract infection, you may have received these mediations. Well, here's what the study showed us So this is a study published in September 2014 that looked at men between age 45 to 80 years of age followed for a 10 year period and in this group there were over 6,000 cases.
Of peripheral neuropathy. And they compared these individuals to about 25,000 aged match controls, and what they found was that risk for developing this devastating condition called peripheral neuropathy was doubled in those individuals exposed to this class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. And what the researchers also told us is that, and I quote, Fluoroquinolones have been shown to neurotoxic. Oral fluoroquinolones have also been associated with reported cases of psychosis and seizures, which similar to peripheral neuropathy have been shown to be acute events occurring within days of fluoroquinolone use.
In light of strong evidence of unnecessary prescribing of oral fluoroquinolones in the United States, clinicians must weigh the risk of PN against the benefits of prescribing FQ when prescribing these drugs to their patients. We've got to practice medicine under the dictum of above all do no harm. One of our most well respected peer review journals is now telling us that the use of these medicationsthese fluoroquinolone antibiotics is associated with doubling of the risk of peripheral neuropathy. A disease which often is not treatable. So keep that in mind the next time you think.

Understanding Peripheral Neuropathy Burning, Tingling and Pain
Here at Richardson Podiatry Center, we see quite a few diabetics. People with diabetes have certain conditions that affect the health of their feet. These conditions are peripheral neuropathy where people lose feeling in their feet, decreased circulation, and also skin conditions such as fungus and ingrown toenails. The most troubling problem diabetics have with their feet is peripheral neuropathy. Approximately 2040 of people with diabetes will develop peripheral neuropathy over their lifetime. What peripheral neuropathy will do is that, with the loss of feeling in your feet, you cannot feel any type of injury to.
Your foot. It's common for people with peripheral neuropathy for their feet to feel like blocks of wood. They can step on any type of sharp object they can cut their feet and not know it. They might not see the problem until they see redness and swelling and maybe even drainage coming from a wound. At that point, the infections are very hard to treat because, again, it's not only peripheral neuropathy caused from diabetes, they also usually have decreased circulation. When you have decreased circulation, your body cannot fight infections like a person.
When you initially presented to the office, you presented with numbness, tingling, and irritation in the lower extremities and feet. We've managed this condition with our peripheral neuropathy program. How have you done with the management and how are you doing today Oh I'm feeling fine, I'm feeling great. When I came in here I thought I'd have to live with pain the rest of my life and it's great, really great. Well we're very very proud to have you here as a patient and congratulations on your results. Thank you doctor, thank you.
Treating Neuropathy and Nerve Pain in the Feet
Let me start with I'm a diabetic. I developed neuropathy, which basically you lose all sensation in the feet, but it's over a period of time. It was very painful. I would have sensations in my feet like I was standing on fire, walking on glass. Last October it got so bad that I couldn't sleep at night. Then I met Dr. Bullard, because he's just a great physician. I wouldn't think twice, I'd recommend him to anybody. Very compassionate, very thorough, I can't say enough about Dr. Bullard. He's just a great physician and I don't know.
If there's anything he couldn't do he could probably move mountains if he wanted to! Glen, probably one of the biggest questions people are asking you is what'd we do, what's happened. Of course, you had a tremendous improvement in your pain and the tingling and the numbness. Easiest explanation is, to tell everybody, that this big nerve here, which is on the inside part of your left foot, was getting strangled. There was a noose around it. What we did is we went in and loosened the noose, and that allows that nerve to begin to function and work like it's supposed.
To. Now, the sensation is coming back, it's something that's going to take time but I can feel more. My quality of life has greatly improved since I had the procedure done by Dr. Bullard. There's no other physician that I would recommend. Glen, in the next couple weeks, what we're going to do is make sure that the swelling is improving, hopefully begin to transition you out of your compression socks, because I know it's kind of hot right now, and then look at making sure that your shoe gear and things like that are where they're supposed.
When we originally began with you, we began treating for chronic low back pain, numbness, tingling, and burning in your feet and lower extremities. How have you done here in our office with the DRS Program and conservative chiropractic management and what was your overall experience here in our office Very good. It's very good I'm feeling a lot better and it works. Great, and you're happy with your care Yes I am. Well very good we're very glad to have you as a patient and we're very proud to help you deliver the results.
