EZSCAN demonstration tutorial
EZSCAN. Screening and prevention of cardiometabolic risk. EZSCAN is a CE certified medical device that measure sweat gland function as an indicator for small fiber peripheral neuropathy to determine cardiometabolic risk. Cardiometabolic risk comprises various risk factors which may lead to type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The test does not require specific training, preparation or certification and only takes two minutes to perform. The patient is asked to put his hands and feet on the stainless steel electrode plates. They must be centered on the plate for maximum skin to electrode contact.
Movement must be avoided and the subject must not be touched during the scan. The patient's name or ID, age, gender, weight and height are typed into the analyzer. The test starts when the Scan button is pressed. As the test starts the electrodes light up and a small direct current of less than four volts is applied to both the hand and foot electrodes. The chloride ions from the sweat glands are attracted to the stainless steel plates. The chloride conductance measured acts as a biomarker to assess sweat function.
In relation to small nerve structure. A double beep indicates that the scan is complete. The patient report is automatically generated and a cardiometabolic percentage risk score is calculated. A risk level is displayed accordingly with the respective scores color index. Green indicates the risk score is 25 percent or less with no sweat dysfunction. Therefore no risk is observed. Yellow indicates the risk score lies between 25 and 50 percent and correlates with moderate sweat dysfunction and risk. Lastly, orangered indicates that the risk score is 50 percent or higher.
And high sweat dysfunction and risk is observed. Followup schedules are determined by the patient's EZSCAN result. A patient with a high risk score is encouraged to return and retest in three months. A patient with moderate risk is encouraged to change his lifestyle and retest in six months. A patient with a low to nonexistent risk score is required to follow up on an annual or semiannual basis for preventative monitoring. EZSCAN is an innovative and easy to use medical device. The test is fast, quantitative, reproducible, noninvasive and doesn't require any patient preparation.

A Canadian first for colorectal cancer treatment
Hepatic Artery Infusion Pump Chemotherapy is a new program that we are opening at Sunnybrook and the Odette Cancer Centre It involves the implantation of a pump that looks like this, into just below the skin level in patients with cancer of the colon and rectum that has spread to the liver and cannot be removed. Essentially, it allows us to put chemotherapy directly into the pump and in so doing, pump the chemotherapy straight into the liver and therefore it allows a much a higher dose of chemotherapy to get these cancers in the liver.
One of the unique things about the program is how multidisciplinary it is, and what I mean by that is, it's critically important that we have expertise from surgeons like myself, from medical oncologists to manage chemotherapy both through the pump and through the vein, from our nurses in the Odette Cancer Centre to help educate patients and monitor them carefully from nuclear medicine doctors who check that the chemotherapy that's given through the pump, is only going to the liver, and from interventional radiologists and other radiologists who will help us check about the response of the tumours to the chemotherapy.
